Order: Orthotrichales
Orthotrichum Growth form: Acrocarp Thomas Blockeel BBS: "... it is probably O. schimperi, which is very close to O. pumilum. I also thought about O. tenellum, which can have abundant gemmae, but the stomata are a little too high up on the capsule for O. tenellum (which has them very low down towards the base). Characters favouring O. schimperi are the rounded leaf apices and strongly recurved leaf margins. Interestingly there is a distinct tuft of hairs on one of the calyptras, which is unusual for O. schimperi, but it does occasionally have a few hairs. To confirm O. schimperi it would ideally be necessary to see the shape of the mature capsule and details of the peristome, especially the inner peristome segments." |
