Black Horehound Ballota nigra Flowering time: June-October. Perennial Grows in hedgerows, waste ground and at field edges in disturbed, nutrient-rich ground. Common throughout much of England and Wales, rare in N Scotland and Ireland. Whorls of 2-lipped red-purple flowers in leaf axils, the funnel-shaped calyx with five pointed teeth. An erect hairy plant, strong smelling when bruised and with short-stalked, coarse-toothed leaves. Height 40-80cm |
