Prefers well-drained neutral to calcareous soil and grows in hedges, at the edge of woodland and on wasteground

A dioecious hairless twining plant with heart-shaped leaves and tiny greenish-yellow flowers. Female flowers are in clusters, male flowers are in long racemes. Berries ripen from green to orange-red and are poisonous
