Prefers well-drained, infertile, base-rich or acidic soils in un-improved grassland and on roadsides, railway embankments and sand dunes

A slightly sage-scented plant with spikes of two-lipped, purplish-blue flowers, usually in whorls of 6. The basal rosettes have stalked oblong-oval leaves, irregularly deep-toothed and wrinkled but stem leaves are stalkless
