Jaapiella loticola Diptera: Cecidomyiidae - gall midge
Jaapiella loticola

Gall on Lotus corniculatus, Birds-foot-trefoil

Hosts:
Lotus corniculatus, parviflorus, pedunculatus, tenuis

Mature larvae are orange-red and unable to jump.

The less frequent Contarinia barbichei forms identical galls but the whitish or yellow larvae are able to jump.

As young larvae of both species are colourless the ability to jump (or not) is the only practical way to differentiate between the two
