Upper surface of leaf with smooth green to reddish swellings, lower surface with hairy, conical projections. Larvae are solitary, yellowish, two to three generations a year. Pupation within gall

Similar: D. engstfeldi; pleat-like swellings, hairy indentations below. Larvae white becoming pinkish.
D. pustulans; small swelling surrounded by pale patch, depression below containing a translucent white larva
