Found on coastal and inland siliceous rocks, well-lit or in shade.

Grey cracked or areolate thallus with crowded rusty orange-red roughened apothecia, their colour remaining unchanged when wet. Margins shiny.
The asci are 8-spored, ascospores 12-14 x 6-8 µm.

Similar: C. ceraceae discs greenish when wet, matt margins
