Common on the trunks and branches of deciduous trees, rare on conifers, lignum and rocks.

Shiny green-brown lobes with shallow notches at apices. Centre of thallus closely adpressed. Coralloid or simple isidia, more regular in shape than those of Melanelixia subaurifera and scratching white. Under-surface black with simple rhizines, light-brown at edges. Apothecia occasional.

Similar: M. fuliginosa. Dark brown lobes, usually found on rocks.
