Growth type fruticose / foliose
Cortex K+ yellow. Two chemical races; Pseudevernia furfuracea var. furfuracea medulla C-, var. ceratea medulla C + rose-red.

Mainly in upland or northern areas on well-lit rocks, fences and acidic bark.

Ascending or pendant, light-grey, strap-like thallus, upper surface isidiate or with small lobules. Older lobes black underneath, white or pinkish below in younger lobes. Apothecia very rare.

Similar: Evernia prunastri. Isidia absent, under-surface whitish
