Can be vey common on open, damp and compacted acidic soil on paths, roadsides, heaths, arable and waste ground

Branched stems covered with silver-grey woolly hairs bear yellow-brown, ray-less flower-heads with pointed brownish bracts. The leaves are alternate, linear-lanceolate, green above and grey-wooly beneath.
