Occasional, forming large patches on dry, well-lit, old parkland and wayside trees. BLS conservation evaluation: LC Sc IR

Thick white, powdery thallus (scratching orange) covered with white soralia. Apothecia are unknown.
Sometimes host to Chaenothecopsis retinens, with red apothecia

Similar: S. niveum. Grey thallus, P+ orange-yellow, UV +/- orange-grey
