Uncommon, found in SW England, S Wales and Yorkshire on soil and cliffs over limestone, chalk and greensand

The adpressed squamules are scattered or contiguous, pale to dark red-brown above, pale or black below with usually conspicuous rhizines. Squamules become dark-green when wet. Asci usually 2-spored, spores muriform, (25-)45-55 x 14-19(-23) µm.

Other British Endocarpon species do not have rhizines
