Growth type crustose
Chemical results: Thallus: C+ red, UV+ white

Common on siliceous rocks and pebbles, rare on worked timber and among rocks on coastal peaty turf.

Scattered white or greyish squamules form clumps or a +/- continuous, overlapping crust, margin subsquamulose. Apothecia have brown or reddish-pink discs with thin whitish margins. Spores simple. Often infertile.
