Rough-barked mature trees and over mosses in old woods and parklands. Usually in Lobarion communities, widespread in north and west of Britain and Ireland.

Thin pale to dark grey-brown minutely granular thallus. Dark red-brown or blackish apothecia, the margins dark brown at outer edge, pale brown or colourless within, excluded with age. Hymenium colourless. Asci 8-spored, spores 1-septate, 10-15 x 5-8 µm.

When sterile the thallus resembles Porina coralloidea
