Common and can be abundant on limestone, concrete, siliceous rock and brick. Characteristic of shaded weakly calcareous rock in many habitats.

The thallus is grey-green to pale brownish-green with numerous +/- immersed perithecia, the apex sometimes slightly irregular. Spores narrow ellipsoid, (15-)17.5-21(-24) x (6-)7.5-8.5(-9.5) µm.

Similar: V. praetermissa. Thicker thallus, freshwater habitat
