Widespread on dunes and dry grassland on neutral, calcareous and acidic soils but avoids nutrient-rich or very acidic ground

Bright yellow flowers with down-turned sepals on grooved flower stalks. The 3-lobed leaves can be more or less hairy and the swollen stem bases store nutrition to enable the plant to over-winter.
