Flowering: June-September. Usually annual. Native / introduced

Parasitic mainly on Fabaceae and Asteraceae in a range of habitats. Several subspecies recognised e.g subsp. minor (probably introduced) on cultivated land and subsp. maritima (native) on coastal cliffs

The two-lipped flowers are usually dull yellowish, tinged purple and equal to or shorter than bracts. Stigma lobes usually purple but sometimes yellow. Stems usually purplish. Very variable parasitic plant producing no chlorophyll
