A rare southern Atlantic and Mediterranean species found on dry, vertical, siliceous rocks at a few sites on the coast of SW England.

The thick, areolate thallus is lead-grey or a dark brownish-grey with a thin black prothallus. Apothecia are immersed, dark brown to black, asci 8-spored, the spores 5-6 septate, 27-35 x 3-5 µm. Micrograph below
