Taeniolella phaeophysciae
Taeniolella phaeophysciae #

Lichenicolous fungus. Photographs on Phaeophyscia orbicularis

Widespread and probably common but under-recorded on thalli of Phaeophyscia, Physcia and Physconia species.

A lichenicolous hyphomycete usually occuring in localized areas of the host thallus. Colonies of dark brown to blackish conidiophores arise from an immersed mycelium composed of flexuose pale brown septate hyphae. Micrographs of conidiophores below.

Similar: Taeniolella cladinicola is parasitic on some Cladonia species but is very rare. It discolours the podetia purplish then dark brown as the very short conidiophores are produced.
