Occurs on the already bleached or weakened thallus of members of the Physciaceae, including Phaeophyscia orbicularis, Physcia adscendens, P. aipolia, P. leptalea, P. stellaris, P. tenella and Physconia distorta

Solitary or loosely grouped perithecia are +/- immersed in the host thallus, usually with only the reddish to brown conical papilla visible. Asci 8-spored, the spores 1-septate, (10-)11-13(-15) × (6-)7.5-9(-10) µm, ends rounded. Micrographs below. The anamorph has curved, multi-septate conidia

Similar: X. zimmermanni also occurs on Physcia but has larger spores
