Chemical results negative. Yellow-red thallus pigment K+ deep red

Common on acid bark, decorticate tree stumps and wooden fences. Tolerant of air pollution.

Often sterile, the granular-verrucose whitish-grey thallus stained yellow or rusty-red in patches. Apothecia with black, shiny stalks, spore mass pale brown, often with yellowish tinge. Asci 1-2 spored, spores globose, 7-8 µm.

Similar: Chaenotheca trichialis. Pigment absent, smaller spores
