Leaf mines on Horse-chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum. Sept 2011
Wingspan: 8mm. First UK record was in SW London in 2002
Flight time: Probably three generations

Food plant: Horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum). Also Acer spp.
Mine: May-October
The egg is laid on the upperside, usually near a vein. A small corridor leads to a large, elongate, upperside blotch, usually between veins. Blotch is cinnamon-coloured with a dark centre and many mines can occur on each leaf, causing serious defoliation.
N.B. The fungus Guignardia aesculi is very similar and can cause confusion
