Common Amaranth Amaranthus retroflexus Flowering time: July-Octoer. Annual. Neophyte Casual or sometimes persistent on disturbed and nutrient-rich waste and arable land. Possibly originally introduced in wool shoddy from N. America Spikes of small greenish flowers with 5 stamens, the tepals rounded with a mucronate tip. Seed capsule splits horizontally and the fruit is a rounded, flattened brown or black nut with 2-3 persistent stigmas. An erect, branched plant with rough stems and long-stalked hairy leaves.
