Growth type crustose
Chemistry: Cortex: K-, C+ yellow, KC+ orange, UV+ orange. Medulla: K-

Usually on shaded, smooth or rough-barked trees. Rare on shaded rocks

Very variable. Thick grey to grey-green thallus with slightly zoned margin, warts with 1(-4) apothecia with thick, crenulate margins, the discs +/- open. Asci are 8-spored, thick walled simple spores 60-110 x 30-50 µm.

Associated lichenicolous fungi include Laeviomyces pertusariicola and Dactylospora parasitica

Similar: P. pertusa. Discs less open, 2-7 apothecia in each wart
