Common on limestone, calcareous rocks and building materials.

Thin or immersed whitish, beige or pale brown thallus. Numerous grouped or scattered apothecia, reddish to dark brown, often +/- immersed. Spores are 1-septate, 7-10(-12) × (2-)2.5-3.5(-4) µm. Paraphyses with dark swollen tips. The photobiont is Dictyochloropsis. Micrographs below.

Similar: Catillaria chalybeia. On siliceous rocks, photobiont Myrmecia. C. nigroclavata is corticolous. C. atomarioides has much smaller apothecia
