Lichenicolous fungus. Photographs on Physcia tenella.

Causes galls on the thallus of Physcia tenella

Galls form on the host thallus, darkish brown to black, becoming brown when mature and containing multiple immersed perithecia. Asci 8-spored, the spores 1-septate, broadly ellipsoidal, 11.5-13 x 8-9 µm (shrinking in lactic acid). Micrographs below.

Similar: Lichenochora galligena is parasitic on Physcia adscendens and has smaller spores. Lichenochora aipoliae is parasitic on Physcia aipolia
