Growth type lichenicolous. Photographs on Phaeophyscia orbicularis

Parasitic on thallus of Phaeophyscia orbicularis, rarely on Physcia species.

The discoloured gall-like swellings are caused by groups of immersed perithecia with only the dark ostioles visible. Asci are usually 8-spored, spores 1-septate, hyaline, 15-18 x 5-7 µm. Pycnidia are absent. The host algal cells are partially killed by the fungus. Micrographs below.

Similar: Lichenochora aipoliae, Lichenochora galligena and Lichenochora physciicola are parasitic on Physcia species
